It’s not very often that gangsta rappers are commended for inspiring positive change in the word. That’s why we were so surprised by the recent news that acclaimed rapper Snoop Dogg has decided to spread the word about the growing problems of cyber crime and identity theft. Marking a significant break from the usual rap lyrics, Snoop Dogg is teaming up with Norton in his latest project.

Through the month of September, rapper Snoop Dogg is encouraging his fans, and anyone else who is a fan of rap and wants to speak out against cyber crime, to enter an online rap video contest. His “Hack is Wack” contest, run by Norton at www.HackIsWack.com, lasts through September 30, 2010. Enter a rap video with lyrics related to online crimes – from hacking to computer viruses to identity theft – and why everyone should take the necessary steps to avoid becoming a victim of such crimes. Snoop Dogg himself has posted an original rap video on the site. The winning rap enthusiast will be announced October 20th.

Why has Snoop Dogg taken this step against cyber crime? It’s not just “regular people” who have to deal with identity theft issues – in fact, superstar rapper Snoop Dogg has been the victim of cyber crime several times. Hackers have stolen his credit card numbers, stolen his music, and even set up fake websites purporting to be Snoop Dogg’s official site.

We applaud Snoop Dogg’s effort to raise awareness of identity theft. Snoop Dogg’s status may have made him the target of cybercrime, but it has also given him an immense audience of fans that he can reach with this important message.

Also take a look at the various identity theft services we’ve reviewed for more information on how they can protect your identity.
